Guidelines for choosing the right rug for your space.

Rug guide Dining RoomDining Room

Typical sizes are 8'x10' and 9'x12'

    • You shouls have at least 24" of room on all sides of the table to allow you to pull out the chairs without getting caught in the rug's outer limits.
    • Flat woven or low pile rugs are ideal for easy chair gliding and cleaning.
    • *Don't be afraid of a rug under your dining table! It's important to anchor the space and especially in open concept homes, it will visually delineate the space.

Typical sizes are 8'x10' and 9'x12’ (and up).

      • You should have the front legs of your furniture on the rug. Ideally about 1/3 of the furniture piece.
      • Ideally, run the rug parallel with the length of the sofa.
      • Ideally, the rug will extend at least 8" wider than each side of the sofa.

Queen Bed Rug Guide

Queen Bed

8'x10' is typical, but if you have the room...Go for the 9'x12'

      • At least 8" between nightstand and rug is ideal, but in smaller rooms, the rug might go under the nightstands and that's ok.
      • Ideally at least 18" showing at the end of the bed.

King Bed Rug Guide

King Bed

9'x12' is ideal, but 8'x10' works for smaller rooms.

  • At least 8" between nightstand and rug is ideal, but in smaller rooms, the rug might go under the nightstands and that's ok.
  • Ideally at least 18" showing at the end of the bed.

Notes

  • BUY THE BIGGER RUG! A rug that is too small for the room makes us sad!
  • To visualize how an area rug will look in your space, use green tape to create a border on the floor.
  • When choosing a rug, don't forget about the practical qualities of the rug (high traffic area, door swings to consider, floor vents, etc).
  • Don't forget a RUG PAD - trim rug pads to leave a 1" space between the pad and the rug edge.
  • If you have a carpeted room, don't be scared to add an area rug over top! It's not against the rules! Choose a low pile area rug so it doesn't feel too thick.
